Remember the Soup

“Remember the Soup” is a love song to soup and an acknowledgement of my Uncle’s struggle with dementia. Soup plays a central role in the story and soup is a powerful, integral part of my writing process. I am a daily writer, the first hour of the day always the most magical. Beyond that initial hour, a large portion of my writing time is spent between the lines. The physical act of making soup is my ideal way to let a story simmer and build. To hear the lines of dialogue in my head, to work out the interiority of characters while physically engaged in the task of chopping vegetables and measuring spices. The fragrance as the separate pieces mingle together and infuse each other to make a better whole, mirrors the writing process and is an ideal backdrop for creativity and inspiration.

I was delighted when I got the call that this story was one of twelve finalists in the 28th Annual Short Prose Competition for Developing Writers and even more excited to receive feedback from the jury. Here is a selection of the comments.
